Extension springs are the long springs that stretch along the tracks on each side of the door. We replace both together and balance the door, the same day — with the safety cables checked so a spring can never whip loose.

Look at the horizontal tracks that run along the ceiling on each side of the door. If there is a long spring stretched along each track — usually with a pulley and cable at one end — you have extension springs. They are common on older South Florida homes and on many single-car doors. If your spring sits on a bar above the door instead, you have a torsion spring.
The two springs share the door's weight. If only one is replaced, the new spring pulls harder than the old one and the door lifts crooked, which wears the cables, rollers and opener. Replacing and balancing both keeps the door running straight.
When an extension spring breaks, it releases its energy all at once. A safety containment cable runs through the middle of each spring so that, if it ever snaps, it stays on the cable instead of flying across the garage. Plenty of older doors are missing them. We check every one and make sure yours are in place before we leave.
Stop using the opener and keep everyone away from the door until it is fixed.
